Shifnal CC Women’s 1st XI got their Midweek Hardball League campaign off to the perfect start with a 30-run victory over Wellington Women in their first match of the season.
Opening batters Katie Seager and Esther Hurford gave Shifnal the ideal platform, both retiring after impressive innings of 30 and 33 respectively. Holly Fozzard then added momentum with a quick-fire 22, before captain Chloe Newbould and Jodie Lane finished the innings strongly with an important unbeaten 30-run partnership to help Shifnal post a competitive total.
Wellington’s reply started positively, but the introduction of Hurford into the attack proved crucial as she removed the dangerous opener caught behind. From there, disciplined bowling and tight fielding from the whole team kept Wellington under pressure throughout the innings.
A strong all-round team performance saw Shifnal control the game well and secure a deserved opening win to start the season.
